Mine Till Midnight
by Lisa Kleypas
Honestly, I'm contemplating whether to rate this a 1 star. I know I'm in the minority and a lot will disagree with my reasons. My feelings about this book can be done in a sentence - - this is my most disappointing book of 2020 so far.
I wanted to like this book, I was looking forward to reading about Cam but much to my disappointment, I don't think he was done well. There were certain things about him that I wish weren't the way they were, like all the excessive intimate scenes he shared with Amelia, which honestly made me like him a bit less. Back in Devil in Winter, I was so intrigued by him and when I realized this was his book, I was super excited. He had the charm and allure, an air of mystery around him and he's an interesting character, not just because he's Gypsy though that's part of it. (No, I'm not accustomed to the culture and traditions or beliefs of a Gypsy, but based from this book they're really interesting).
I didn't like Amelia. Since I've not read Lillian's book still (and I've yet to develop an interest in doing so), I'll say Amelia is Lisa Kleypas' character I dislike the most. I took offense on how she said that being with Cam in an intimate way didn't mean anything to her, and how she continuously brushed him off for almost 70% of the book. I've found their intimacy (the first encounter) very romantic and sincere, especially among the other Lisa Kleypas books I've read and reading how Amelia dismissed it so easily was just appalling for me. She was just too detached to everything, like there was no depth in her character aside from her being responsible towards her siblings. Also, I can't say she's a strong woman or independent, simply because I didn't like her constant disregard of the help offered to her so many times by different people. It's too much pride, and it's unnecessary.
I'm all for families and a wide cast of characters but this is too much. I've heard someone say that Kleypas' first books in series usually don't heavily focus on the main characters/couple but rather it's used as a jumping point or introduction for the other characters - - I don't like that style. I think if proper focus on Cam and Amelia were given, I would've appreciated them more.
I didn't find like the romance in this book, I didn't even see how Amelia fell in love with Cam. To me, it felt like she's pushed him away too many times then by the end, BAM, sudden realization that she loves him. And all throughout I was wondering how??? When did you develop feelings? Where was the concern for him??
This book started out strong, especially the opening scenes. It's sad that there was no follow up to that and I'm sad that I didn't like this as much as the others did. Until now, I'm thinking about what happened to the bonnet's ribbon.
