This is not an academic response, but I just don’t buy it. Kiste failed to sell me on the surrealism of the setting to make any of the rust maiden stuff believable. I’ve read lots of horror and surreal content and there’s just something missing here. I don’t buy that this happened in the 1980’s in Cleveland, Ohio. I don’t buy that an FBI agent would sleep with an 18 year old JUST graduated high school and then face no consequences, then become obsessed with the town and make a museum? Like Adrian just does not make sense to me. And the parents collectively not caring AT ALL? It just doesn’t work. Also, I did not like the slight lean to anti-union sentiments. Not cute.
