The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy
2.0

I gave up after 50 pages.

This certainly isn't a bad book, but it's a little too cutesy and poorly plotted for my taste. Reminiscent of Lucky Jim and Brother of the More Famous Jack, it plays like an ancestor of a Diane Johnson novel and a descendant of a Henry James one, but saucier and more carefree. Dundy is a good writer and comes up with some nice observations about the "innocent" abroad (I particularly liked her descriptions of Paris), but this just seems too much like other, better novels I've read.
