This book had GREAT potential. It's one of those that has great potential, but is not the best executed. Which is a huge shame!
There are a few things I did enjoy:
- Jackson's writing always knows how to bring tension and set the atmosphere, and her general writing style was MADE for crime writing! Could never become bored of her general skills.
- I like Bel's mission to make Rachel seem like the bad guy when intact it's Charlie we should have been watching out for all along . It gives her a great path for character development, which with more time I think could have been a nice and heartwarming addition.
- Carter and Bels relationship is GREAT. I likethe little spoiler at the beginning which you only know about once you've read it once. Their relationship really reflects a family dynamic and is refreshing to see.
But saying that...this book did fall short. So much hype on social media about it's realise, and I don't know if that raised my expectations or not. But it did just fall short for multiple reasons:
- Rachel appears very quickly in the book...a bit too quickly for my liking. The title suggests it's going to be Bel solving this disappearance, and Rachel turning up too quickly stops this being part of the main focus. I think it would have been better if Rachel was found towards the end sort of like a big reveal.
- Patrick is a sweet soul, but the fact he gets used as the main person responsible for Rachel's disappearance (minus Charlie) and then has dementia seems like a get out of jail free card. I would have rather seen him play a different role. I'd have also like to see more of Jeff and Sherry particularly as they play a larger role then first shown.
Whilst I have my likes and dislikes, I can never say I hate a Jackson book. Compared to the AGGTM series it does feel a little flat. Some parts of the plot just seem like they're being used to tie ends together and do so very loosely. I think with more time it could have been a great book! Even if the story stayed the same...the main issue I have is the timeline. Hoping this is a one off as Jackson is my favourite writer.
