elissazimmer 's review for:
The Summer of Jordi Perez
by Amy Spalding
What worked:
Really sweet story of first romance and falling in love. I liked that this story didn't center around Abby being gay, she just was and her relationship with Jordi took me back to being 17 and falling in love for the first time.
Great setting of East LA. Lots of place markers.
What didn't work:
I wanted more of Abby's blog. More of the content. We got a lot of her outfits and did understand that she was fashionable but how do you have a blog about fashion that doesn't feature pictures, just reblogs of products? Had a hard time picturing that.
The conflict didn't feel as fully fleshed out as it could. I think there could have been more exploration around Abby's relationship with her mom and her body image, but I felt we just scratched the surface and then Abby's fight with Jordi about pictures didn't feel as high stakes.
