The Night Raven by Sarah Painter
4.0

Lydia Crow, sheltered away from the semi-criminal life of the magical Crow clan, moves back to London from years of running away. Her uncle wanted her to find her cousin Maddie while housing her at his run-down Cafe. Where the resident ghost saves her from assassination as soon as she crossed the threshold.

And of course, soon she was going around London, hitting up old friends and family, shaking loose secrets left and right. This being the set up book, no deep dark secret yet, but plenty of hints that life amongst the four magical families are not so mild and blended-in-with-the-normal-folks as she was led to believe.

SpoilerShe find Maddie, who turns out to be one the strongest member of the Crow family, and had been hiding out because she was tired of being directed and controlled by her family. Lydia didn't know it, but is probably the other strong member, with the ability to strength magic in her presence. That's how Jason, the ghost, was able to become corporeal enough to save her in the first place.

I enjoyed it very much. The tropes of urban fantasy are all here: strong minded woman baby-PI starting out on her first real investigation, hot men left and right as past or potential love interests, the background of well-established hidden society in plain sight. There is enough unique details and spins to make the tropes come alive into their own. I'm now quite interested in the plot and characters, and will move right onto the next book.
