The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk
4.25

This really did put the BIG in Big Book Summer!

After reading and enjoying both Flights and Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead last summer, it was only a matter of time before I would read the Books of Jacob.

Described as Tokarczuk’s “masterpiece”, this book certainly demonstrated her enormous talent as a writer. Following the life of Jacob Frank, a Polish Jew who claimed to be the Messiah, this book was fascinating historically and theologically.

This was by no means an easy read, alongside its length, I found many of the Polish names hard to keep track of, particularly when certain characters changed their names as they moved countries and religions. However, I’m really glad that I read it and I’m already itching to do more research into Jacob Frank and his followers.
