The Book That Broke the World by Mark Lawrence
5.0
I…..am…..SHOOK!!!
And I thought the first book was emotionally devastating. This one gave its predecessor a run for its money, then took said money to Vegas, gambled it and won a cool million dollars more. Even though I loved the first book immensely, I was so much more invested this time because we got a lot more twists, way more character development, especially with Evar, tons more emotion and edge-of-the-seat moments, and some extremely tense, brutal scenes. Not to mention a fair bit of disturbing and horrific imagery here and there.
I am in total awe of this world Lawrence has created for this series. As the first book pretty much kept a majority of the action within the library, we actually got to venture out of the library to other places within the world. And being that this world is, upon first impression from Book 1, a very savage, despairing environment, it added a sort of vulnerability for the characters that was unsettling yet very exciting because being in the library always yielded a type of “safety”, like a kind of comfort, despite the fact there are dangers in the library as well.
I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the amount of information accumulated in this story that helped me understand a lot better where everything is going. And where it’s been. Things are starting to make a lot more sense. There is clearly a major war coming, and its premise is extremely intriguing. Questing for knowledge (or not), which appears to be a sort of spiritual ideology in this fantasy world. There are some very powerful messages in this book. Choosing sides will NOT be easy! But I fear the regrets for some will be even harder. Yeah, sign me up!
And with the cliffhangers ending this novel, I only pray I can stay alive solely to see Book 3 even if it’s the last book I ever read! It’s going to be a long, excruciating wait.
Damn, I can give this book ONLY 5 stars! It deserves far more. I cannot highly recommend this book near enough. Please, I beg you to read this series. It is one of the best fantasy - or probably any genre! - book series that I have read in a long time.
