Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

5.0

I knew about the movie version from Miyazaki but didn't know it was based on a book. That said, I completely fell in love with Jones's book. There are so many hints and clues to things outside of Sophie's perceived knowledge, I have to read the book again just to pick up on things I missed. Howl is of a drama queen, but is also sweet and charming. And Calcifer rocks as a fire demon with a heart of his own. ;-) The books deals more with romantic entanglements than the movie, but in light of the book's depiction of Sophie, Miyazaki's version captured the essence the story very well. It's not often that I equally love both the book and movie version of a story, but really, in this case, I can't choose one over the other. They are both that awesome. Five scarecrows out of five, and everyone needs to own a pair of seven league boots.
