The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

2.75

Maybe im not smart enough for this book. Despite very detailed descriptions I couldn't really picture what I was reading, it was a bit too convoluted. I'm gutted because her other book 'The Night Circus' was so vivid and magical in my imagination.

My favourite parts were the snippets of stories told throughout that makes me think I'd love an interconnected ss collection from Erin Morgenstern because these were beautiful and weaved intricately through Zachary's story. I couldn't connect to the main character and was dissatisfied with his romance with Dorian that not only felt 'Insta Lovey' but was not fleshed out enough for my liking.

Anytime I felt I was grasping the story, 2 pages later I was confused again. This had metaphors in metaphors that seemed to go over my head. I could see this being a book you read 2/3 times and make new connections you missed previously so it stays engaging but I found it so long winded that I was waiting for the finish line so a second read will never happen.
