The Darkest Night
by Gena Showalter
I am scratching my head as to why I kept this on my ‘to be read’ list for so long. I loved the overall concept of the series – immortal warriors who are cursed by gods to have demons inhabit their bodies, burdening each warrior with a horrid compulsions / characteristics: Violence, Wrath, Disease, Doubt, Misery, etc. Their hubris, which was the catalyst for their curse, makes them more “human” and easier to relate to. The distinct personality of each of the warriors, partially developed by the compulsion they carry, makes them quite interesting as individuals and makes for interesting group dynamics – 6+ hot alpha men in one house – HELLO!!!
As for the love birds, they weren’t my absolute favorite couple, but I did like them and found them enduring. I particularly liked Ashlyn whose ability to hear conversations past and present was (a) pretty damn cool, (b) almost created secondary characters that helped develop the story. I also liked that she was kind of girl next door who was attractive in her own way, but not this tall, busty, drop dead gorgeous model. And while I somewhat expected the ending, I did not expect it to be written so well that I was boo hooing.
The only reason I couldn’t give this a full 5 stars was because I felt like I missed some of the background on the new world. I would have liked to get more about the Titans, the Greeks, etc. I’m hoping this will be developed in future books in the series, which I am excited to read.
