The Thirteen Treasures by Michelle Harrison
4.0
First fae/faerie based book I have enjoyed in a while. I have tried getting into them before, reading the Spiderwick Chronicles etc. but this is the first one that really grabbed my attention from the start and that is thanks to Michelle Harrison's fantastic writing!
Tanya is being forced to stay with her grandmother after some unruly behavior that left her mother without any other options. Of course she can't really blame the fairies seeing as her mother can't see them.
Her grandmother's house also includes the caretaker,Warwick(quiet & stern), his father Amos (crotchety & grumpy), and his son Fabian. I loved the reluctant friendship in the book between Fabian & Tanya, both suspicious of any warmth as they have been let down by parents and guardians before.
The story itself is full of mystery, secret passages, missing people and a creepy forest. While Tanya is at Elvesden Manor, she learns that maybe she isn't the only person to see fairies and old family secrets are coming out that her Grandmother wishes to forget. But her lack of communication on the subjects only endangers Tanya and Fabian in the end.
I loved Tanya as a main character, though constantly foiled by fairies in the beginning, she didn't hate them, even being fond of some of the ones in the house that heated the tea etc. I loved her determination to one up the fairies whether it be rhyming or tricking them like they do to humans.
I listened to this book via audio book so I want to give a shout out to Nikky Diss who is a great narrator, as always!
I can't wait to read the next one in the series, with some of the set up at the end of this one I have a feeling where the story is going and I am very excited!
