Ruthless Creatures by J.T. Geissinger
DID NOT FINISH

I got this book in a goodreads giveaway...and I probably shouldn't have. I didn't like chapter one, but I got through chapter two, and then I called it. I think this will be some people's next favorite read, but I disliked this from the get-go.

First up, the positives; it is clearly written and well edited. Plus, the cover is cool.

Now for what made me DNF. The main character is described as depressed/grieving in the most aggressive and unrealistic way. As someone who has actually struggled with depression it felt disingenuous and like it was being used as a setup for a plot device rather than actually giving representation for a depressed + grieving character.

The best friend character, Sloane, is supposed to be funny and banter-y but came off like a pick-me girl. There is a chatty older woman, Diane, who comes off as neurodivergent in my opinion and is immediately hated on. Polyamory is mentioned to make a joke. It just left a yucky taste in my mouth.

To be clear, I don't think the book is problematic. It is just very heteronormative, neurotypical, mononormative, and allosexual... and that's just not me and it's not what I want to read for fun.
