The Hidden World of the Fox by Adele Brand

informative fast-paced

3.0

This book is about red foxes in and around London, their interaction with humans, and a plea for them to be accepted and enjoyed for what they are. Other species are mentioned briefly or not at all, and populations outside of England mentioned mostly in passing. The specific impetus for the book seems to have been some anti-fox proposals in Britain that I, as a resident of the United States, know nothing about.

I wish I had known this before starting the book, because I was expecting something broader and more general, about foxes as a whole, comparing species, talking about unique adaptations to environments, perhaps. There was little of that, but then the book wasn't trying to do that so it almost seems unfair to complain about the lack. Still, I was disappointed.

But it does do an excellent job of talking about the lives of foxes in London and its suburbs and how people interact with them. If you're interested in that, the book is a quick, informative read.
