School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins
2.0

This book is obviously set in the same "universe" as the author's [b:Hex Hall|5287473|Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1)|Rachel Hawkins|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1368393885s/5287473.jpg|5354884]series, but, alas, it is nowhere near as good, or at any rate near as good as the first book in that series. (All I've read to this point. Being poor = library for me = I get what I get when I can get it.) Quite generic in terms of characters, dialog, setting, just about any category you'd care to name. Not awful by any means, but surrounded with a stench of yep-she-mailed-this-one-in.

Normally the sort of thing I'd rate at three stars, but that truly awful ending, ick. One character took a sharp turn into out and out sociopath territory, from whence they shall never return. Meh, better spoiler it...
Dex's grandmother dies saving his life. How does Dex react? To the death of the woman who raised him his whole life? He, well, doesn't. Ol' Dex just goes Oh, well, better move in with this chick who's friendzoned me and her mother and drop out of high school. NopeNopeNope. Good grief. Nana apparently doesn't even rate a funeral.
My sense is that that was just a bit more, and a particularly egregious example, of the rampant unreflected "mail it in to justify my advance"-ism that pervaded this book, but still. WTF?
