The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

3.0

I wanted more from this book sadly. Not enough time is spent soaking in the terror. Tell me more about Bible and Ranger. Show me more buses or holes. I had so many moments where I was starting to get scared, and ended up feeling like there was a missed chance everytime.
Another gripe was the writing style. While I enjoyed "what moves the dead", I found the writing in this to lean a little to close to Marvel and Disney in the relatable and snarky category. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being about to relate to a protagonist but the constant inner monolougue and song choice that pops up constantly started to irk me a bit. You don't have to quirky to be relateable.
This is all to say that there is a good book hiding in here, and not just the source material. Had the auhor gone more into the grossness, I think I would have liked it a lot more, but as it stands, this feels like "How to not die in an alternate world, hee hee".
