Whispers Under Ground by Ben Aaronovitch
4.5
adventurous mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I enjoyed this book much more than the first 2. The protagonist, Peter Grant, is far less horny and much more likeable — Lesley coming back is maybe part of this. Suddenly, Peter isn’t talking so much about her body but she is speaking for herself, almost as if she’s a person and not a sack of flesh with tits attached.
There were more female characters in this and they had variety and brought interesting turns to the plot. The FBI agent that is introduced gains merit with her character and action rather than her body which, after the first 2 books, is a breath of fresh air!
I do feel like the diversity has dropped significantly since the first book, in a place like London I would expect more diverse characters.
The plot was deeper and more mysterious. It was great to have two lines of sight — the current murder and the case of the Faceless Man (which I think is a terrible name but here we are). I was engaged throughout and couldn’t put the book down.
I am starting to see something suspiciously like character development in Peter Grant which can only be a good thing — I am hopeful this will continue.
The author is great at provoking questions which need answering so I’m onto the next book.
