Straight Talking
by Jane Green
I dithered between 2 and 3 stars on this one, because I just didn't feel that drawn to the narrator at all (my favorite character is one she is a complete jerk to), and it seemed to lack Green's usual humor. Still, it had several things going for it. I love when she addresses the reader as "you" or "dear reader," because it adds an intimate, confessional tone. Some of her ideas on choosing family were interesting, and I liked the group dynamic with her girlfriends. I know it's chick lit, but the ending seemed contrived, too conveniently-ever-after even for this genre. Overall, an engaging read--largely due to Green's gift as a storyteller/narrative voice.
