Iron Flame takes the story further than the previous Fourth Wing whilst still keeping it's characters at the core of it's plots. The slight difference is that side characters are given more time to shine which is good and the central plot of tension between violet and Xaden's complicated romance can become quite intense but slightly drag upon longer reading sessions.
There is less action in the first 3/4 of this book but that is standard in the genre but I do think it is missing just a little bit of heart compared to the first book. This is likely due to so many moving parts.

Graphic: Torture
Moderate: Injury/Injury detail
