Earthlings
by Sayaka Murata
dark
medium-paced
Jesus christ. This book is dark, barely humorous. The most disconcerting of the three that I have read. While this book still explores themes of belonging, societal expectations, trauma, etc, it does so in a much more grim way than both Convenience Store Woman and The Vanishing World. I can only give it a three because I was so disturbed reading the whole thing that I can't even really praise the parts of the book that were clever and well written. I think I would have tolerated this as a novella or short story much better.
Graphic: Death, Cannibalism
Moderate: Child abuse
