The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
slow-paced
1.0
What was promised: A person (Gyre) desperate for money takes a dangerous caving job, holding her promise to reunite her family close to herself while she pretends at more competence than she has. Her handler, a faceless villain (Em), blackmails her into increasingly dangerous situations, culminating in SCI-FI CAVE ZOMBIES.
What we got: 14 hours of Gyre melodramatically panicking over nothing, making no effort to actually keep her desperate secret an actual secret, and continuously screaming "fuck you, fuck you, I do what I want," while Em, the most softhearted "villain" ever, continuously goes "you're right, it's my fault you stupidly cut off your own arm and refused medical assistance." The zombies are nonexistent, unless you count "cave worm that was known to live in the cave" or "easily panicked person hallucinates at shadows" as zombies, which I do not.
Blurb writers working overtime here, unlike Gyre and Em.
