I'm late to the party here but I loved this book. I have not spent so much time reading a book ever.
Massie paints a vivid picture of Russia before and during the reign of Peter the Great. The book is so densely packed with historical information that I found myself reading articles and encyclopedia entries to better understand the context of the story.
Peter was an amazing figure who helped Russia join the broader world community in a time when enemies were many and allies were few. His character, strength, and ferocity left their mark on Russia, Europe, and the Middle East. Amazing.
