Feel like this could almost be a 3 star book when I had finished, but am going to stick to 4 star for it is still a good book on DID.
This book does contain content that could be triggering for some people. There are descriptions of physical and sexual abuse as well as rape in the book.

Overall it was an easy read in the grade level it was written. Even though there were a few points in which the editor clearly missed misspellings and fat-fingering moments. At least twice a phrase was used that really shouldn't have been were it was. Out of context it was nothing special, but their placing shortly after (as in 1-3 sentences after) the patient tells of something they at lived through was wrong on the author's placement. Each time he had used the phrase I had to stop reading to reassess and disjoint the phrase from what I had just read, and if there was more going on between him and the patient that he is admitting.

There were a few times it felt as though he had placed some of the blame of his marriage falling apart on the patient while at the same time stating that it wasn't complete that person's fault. Couple of other points in the book as came off like he was trying to inflate his ego than caring about the patient he was treating/helping. Why at no point did he seek others in the field who have help those with DID for information and guidance in treating the patient? Also, there were points when the information, knowledge, and process was made to be smoother than what could be generally expected. Particularly with a therapist who had never worked with or studied DID before. Seems a bit odd that one of the alters of the system would have the answer and solution on how the integration of the alters would go.

What is good about the book is that it gives a better understanding and perspective of how the mind works for those with DID. Though the stories of what the patient suffered and survived through as a child seem far fetch and heartbreaking they do and have occurred. How a person developed DID as a child helps in understanding some of the behavioral traits come to play as well as the varying alters that had developed if the alters are known about.
Would recommend for any who wanting to learn more about DID, but with with a warning of the content and some of the wording.
