As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann

dark slow-paced

2.75

While this book was recommended to me by a friend, which I appreciate because I love knowing what my friends enjoy, I hated As Meat Loves Salt.

The main character, Jacob Cullen, is a vile, irredeemable man who I did not, for even a moment, like. He does awful and disgusting acts of physical, emotional, and sexual violence that make me feel uncomfortable being in his head to witness. Ferris is also manipulative and his behavior disgusting and holier-than-thou, but I found most of the characters insufferable, especially through the unreliable narrator lens.

The writing, while sometimes beautiful, was so dry that I felt like I was being dragged. It hasn't taken me this long to finish a book in months. In between the violence Jacob enacts and his yearning, I was so bored. The lulls were so low and stretched so long that sitting down to read this for longer than 15 minutes felt like a chore.

I'm sure there's appeal in reading about someone awful who *is never redeemed nor receives punishment*, but it's not for me.
