I don't know how to rate this and am very confused about how I feel about it.

Now that it has been a couple of days and I have had time to ponder and process about how I feel about the book, here are a few thoughts. First of all, the writing and the characters are remarkable! I'll give this one to Rooney for writing exceptionally flawed, imperfect and real characters.

The book follows the complicated relationship (or the lack thereof) of Marianne and Connell through the years of their high school and college. Now, I can kind of understand what the author wants to implicate with the ambiguous ending of the book that we don't always get to be with someone even if we actually click with them. Sometimes, it's the timing, career preferences or external factors like the fear of being judged by society, but what made me frustrated was the massive miscommunication element! So much, I mean so much could have been avoided and savoured at the same time if they could have just been honest and open with each other.

She would have laid on the ground and let him walk over her body if he wanted

This is one of the examples where I can say that I don't particularly agree with Marianne giving Connell so much power over her and yet still understand where she's coming from.
When someone makes such a deep impression on your mind and soul, it's not easy to think rationally.

Overall, it was an okay book for me, just that I felt sorry for the characters and weirdly depressed (more than I actually was) but I guess to put it in the most simple words, they just weren't meant to be together.
