Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke

Much like short story collections, I have a soft spot for novellas. They’re fun, quick, and plot driven. However I’m normally in the minority because a lot of people end up wanting more out of it. I’ve seen some people say exactly that about this.

But I disagree. I actually think this was very satisfying for how short it was. I thought we knew everything we really needed to about the mc. It was just the right amount of chilling too. Not only does it have a creepy/evil kid in it. But it has alien/otherworldly, almost lovecraftian inspired creatures that will definitely appear in my nightmares tonight. The general gist of the story was super enjoyable for me, and the writing style while starting rough actually really grew on me. Also really love that ominous and creepy ending! There’s also a bit of reality bending in this that’s done super well!

You don’t get tons of answers as to what these beings are, but are given enough clues that you can get an idea! I don’t think that has anything to do with it being a novella and more due to it being the mystery of alien/ otherworldly life though.

All I can say for sure is, I absolutely adored this and can see myself reading it again. And once I found out what was going on, I actually found it to be pretty dark and twisted. Definitely unsettling. This is a grisly and disturbing little book.

Also, my teeth hurt like a mf!
