Nyxia by Scott Reintgen

5.0

Oh geez- this booked hooked me fast! Nyxia is a science fiction story but it has some very authentic voices. The main character, Emmett, is from Detroit and his language and life could be happening today. The only twist on this world is that there is a super powerful, multi-billion dollar company called Babel who has discovered a substance called Nyxia which can be manipulated by the human mind to be turned into pretty much anything. The only issue is that the Nyxia is on a planet native to the Adamite species which is far-more advanced than humanity and has a soft spot for human children. Capitalism being what it is, Babel takes 20 scruffy poor teens from Earth and set them to complete for the opportunity to mine for the Nyxia, guaranteeing themselves and their families riches for years and years to come. The writing is great; lots of action but also authentic emotion as the teens spend months together competing and becoming friends. I just loved it- couldn't stop reading it. Although I don't always read the full trilogies of books, I might try with this one!
