Having read both first books in the simultaneous shadow/sea trilogies, this was my favorite of the two. I felt this book filled in more details about the Emperor and the role the Elders play in Wight’s world. I’m not sure I’ll invest the time into the other 2 (or 4 - for the complete experience) books. While it was fun to read, I felt there were just too many characters, moving parts, and world-elements to try understand and it made the book(s) feel like a lot of work and confusion.
