This Golden Flame by Emily Victoria
3.5
3,5 stars.
Although I did enjoy this book and it has great diversity, some things bothered me.
For starters I did not feel the bond between the characters that should have been there. Karis and Alix being unbreakable friends? In the end I started feeling it. But telling us it’s there, doesn’t make it that it is.
I also couldn’t connect to some characters at all, like Korcha, Wreska, Ava and Finn.
I did like Zara a lot.
Second point: I love that Finn is non binary, but, how believable are you as a writer when you misgender your own character twice shortly after you told everyone their pronouns? Although I didn’t happen after that, it did keep on bothering me...
Pro: Karis being aromantic + asexual! This is so great! There is a serious lack of representation for this and the fact that this is own voices representation makes it even better.
Alix was a great character. Emily Victoria did a great job on showing us his point of view as an automaton who doubts his own validity.
I did quite enjoy the world in general although I do think we could have gotten more world explanation.
TLDR:
I did like this book, but there’s some things that annoy me. My feelings for this book are all over the place.
