I really wanted to love this book, but it did not work for me, at least not at this moment. It is a good book though.
Ninefox Gambit has some of the most interesting and original world building, but it is quite complex. Similarly the characters, especially Cheris and Jedao, are very well-developed and truly have depth, inner conflict and growth, but somehow I did not connect with them.
I was not very invested in the story as I was continuously trying to absorb the world I was thrown in, I think. There was a clear main quest, but I did not see or feel the necessity or the mechanism behind it. What would the impact be of failure for this society.
Meanwhile there are layers of layers of consipracies and factions. This potentially makes for an extremely engaging story, but for me, too much of this happened outside my view as a reader.
Now I am a big Malazan fan and I can think that either a reread or continuing the series will manage to ameliorate some of these things I bumped into. At this point in time, I'm just not up for it, so I'll put this series in my temporarily discontinued list and see whether I feel like picking it up in the future.
