This Splintered Silence
by Kayla Olson
I had mixed feelings after finishing this one. On the one hand, I couldn't put it down. It completely sucked me in, largely due to the beautiful prose and the fascinating setup. It's such an interesting premise, and it was well-executed for the first two thirds or so. The final third was a little tangled for me, with too many things converging and then kind of just resolving themselves.
But I think that mainly, my mixed feelings emerge from wanting more emotional depth. I certainly felt Lindley's exhaustion and grief. I felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. But I didn't feel her relationship with the other characters - specifically the five that made up the rest of the leadership group, who we were told many times were her dearest friends. I really didn't feel those relationships throughout the story, and as a result, finding out who was behind what was happening left no impact on me.
I also really didn't know what to make of the romance aspect. I didn't feel much emotion behind it and had no real connection to either Heath or Leo in relation to Lindley. I wasn't invested at all, and the lack of resolution of that aspect made me wonder why it was part of the story at all.
Overall, I would say 3.5 stars, but I rounded up because THAT PROSE. Seriously lovely.
