Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman
1.0

Whooboy this is painful. DNF’d at 14%.

I HATED Tess D’uberville, which this book is based on; and yet at least Thomas Hardy was readable. (If I’d known from the start it was a fantasy rewrite I would have kept far away. [if I’d ever believed there was a book to make me appreciate Tess D’uberville a little more before now I would have been skeptical])

This is slow, agonizingly depressing and super unlikable. I was enjoying the prologue with the kids and then wham bam, they’re grown up at seventeen and it quickly became horrifying.

Good thing it was a library book—except now someone else will be traumatized by it. And I didn’t even get to the worst parts yet, from the reviews I read spoiling the ending.
