There was a lot I liked about this book. It’s definitely My Sisters Keeper with a love story thrown in.

I loved the love story… for the most part. I loved the letters giving a flash back. I ABSOLUTELY adored Beckett. Ugh Ella, more on her later.

I have mixed feelings about the endless string of trauma and tragedy that Ella experiences. I agree with some reviews, it felt a bit over the top, At the end of the day it gripped me and ripped my heart in two, but I am okay with it.

Please forgive my rant but I gotta get it off me chest…

Unpopular opinion, at times I found Ella really unlikable. I get she has been through a lot. Trauma can really do a number on how you respond when triggered and even go about your day to day life. Totally get that. Ella is super duper protective over her kids, I am a mama bear too! I also had my first baby at 19 who was born with a rare birth defect. There was a lot I could relate to with this character. And yet, she really annoyed me half the time!
Ella is snarky and snappy at times that just read really immature. Her reaction in conversations with doctors and educators when discussing her kids rubbed me wrong. The author seems confused about being protective parent who is assertive and proactive for their kids, with just having poor emotional regulation and being needlessly aggressive. I would be fine with it if it was just a character flaw but she writes it in a way that makes me feel like she thinks this should make the reader find Ella admirable.
Okay fine, she is aggressively protective and that’s because of all her trauma. Fine. I accept that. BUT THEN *SPOILER RIGHT HERE* she is so protective yet she would rather give Beckett rights to her kids than just marry him, even in name only? “I don’t believe in marriage” great then NBD that you sign a paper and move along but you would rather legally GIVE RIGHTS TO YOUR KIDS TO SOMEONE?! What?! That MADE NO FREAKING SENSE! The attempt to justify but it was so weak and un-freaking-believable to me that it really killed the vibes for the story to me.

I loved Beckett and the kids. Beckett will live rent free in my mind for a long while. lol. Ella was a struggle for me.

I like Rebecca Yarros’s writing for the most part. That being said, I am realizing after this book there is a pattern I am seeing that I sometimes struggle with how she writes her female main characters. We will have to agree to disagree on qualities we find as praiseworthy.
