The Jackal by J.R. Ward

3.0

There were several things that bothered me about this book, but I’ll admit this might be my fault for jumping into a long-standing series without reading in order.

A lot of the reactions for both main characters are not realistic. I accept a certain level because the plot needs to happen, but this was more than noticeable. The whole dynamic between them really didn’t fall into place despite the authors efforts until the last 1/4 of the book. The differing timelines and POVs were at times difficult to follow. Spicy scenes were painfully written and the overly technical vocabulary in the first especially had the opposite effect than what was intended.

That all said, there are elements I did enjoy. The bones of the universe are intriguing and I’m curious enough to go back and read at least the first book or two in order to see if maybe this is just the odd book out in an otherwise good series.
