Did not finish book. Stopped at 51%.
The dialogue in this was so cringey. I imagine, at the time this was published, editors may have pushed for this kind of Spanglish but people don’t talk like this! These conversations quickly became call-and-response interactions catering to a English speaking audience.
Example:
Character 1: Estás loca!
Character 2: No, I’m not crazy!
Character 1: Sin pena!
Character 2: It is shameful!
The dialogue became so predictable and I realized I was rolling my eyes more than enjoying getting to know the characters. Then we find out the heroine’s dad is dying from cancer and is refusing treatment?? That becomes central to the plot and I can’t do this to myself.
