How to Pronounce Knife by Souvankham Thammavongsa

5.0

this one was supposed to be an easy read but turned out to hit me in the gut with every subsequent page and every subsequent chapter.

made up of vignettes, how to pronounce knife feels familiar, full of stories that are resonant or at least hold feelings that exist across the spectrum of immigrant experience. there is shame and pride and community and loss and most of all, overarchingly, so much love bringing each aspect of the book together.

the book is written relatively simply, but that just makes each line hit harder when the vignettes comes to a close. the book isn't long but it's so so good and so so applicable, bringing to the forefront small moments of significance.
