Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield
4.0

It's a bit like Chronicle of a Death Foretold or Death in Venice- you know from page one that the protagonist isn't going to make it out alive. This is particularly ironic when he opens a funerary business to support the death and grief obsessed Victorians.

William Bellman is a jack of all trades whose childhood mistake of heartlessly killing a rook comes back to haunt him in all sorts of ways. It colors his every waking moment black, as you may guess by the title.

Not as compelling as The Thirteenth Tale but haunting enough to be getting along with.
