The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5.0

4.75✩
In The Secret History, Donna Tartt crafts a hypnotic and multifaceted story, unlike anything I ever read before. This book is told in a unique and atmospheric writing style, thus leading us in a strange and dark dreamlike narrative.

Beautifully and romantically written, this novel is about five young adults and university students committing an act of murder and dealing with its consequences in a very human and realistic manner. A modern Greek tragedy and a classic in its own way, The Secret History is filled with exceptional character developments, an immersive setting, and a slow-building tension. Every single element in this long and dense storyline is skillfully measured and perfectly done.

It is also important to note that Donna Tartt’s novel touches on heavy and unsettling themes: rites and rituals, hate speech, slut-shaming, homophobia, racism, incest, sexual assaults, alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide, and murder.

The Secret History is one of these books that leave you thinking. Donna Tartt has become one of my favourite authors, and I look forward to reading more of her work.
