The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

4.25

I loved this book and honestly it would be a five star if the pacing wasn't so off. Start is very slow, which I don't mind in character-based fiction, however it was 200 pages of slow start, which is a lot. Then there's a ton of high-stakes action, which is brilliantly executed. But when that's done, we still have like 200 pages of falling action. That's my only gripe though because I loved the characters so much, especially Misaki (how often do we get a badass sword-wielding mom in sci-fi??), the world-building, the elemental magic system, and some of the best fight scenes I've ever read. I'll be thinking about this hauntingly beautiful book for a while to come.
