My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan
3.5
funny sad medium-paced

I probably wouldn't have picked this up if it wasn't for the movie, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised at how nice the story actually was.

I've seen some criticism in the top reviews, about certain parts of it being unrealistic and such, but honestly, I was just here for the romance, not Oxford as a setting, so it didn't bother me much.

Fun fact, I did actually visit Oxford once, a looong time ago. I think I was around eleven, and it was a grand ol' time.

But anyway, the audiobook was the way to go, I really enjoyed the narration. The story was funny in parts, sad in others, though it failed to make me cry. Mayhaps the movie will? I just never connected to the characters to that level where I felt anything of note, which is not to say I didn't enjoy the book as a whole.

The romance was a bit clichéd yes, but not bad overall. I did prefer Connor to Jamie, and thought he was a good sport about the whole thing when he didn't really have to be (but he did, because he's the best man in the book).

Now, if you're planning on reading this because you want to see Ella attending classes...don't. She barely goes, it serves as a background for her story with Jamie. The most you'll get out of it is at the start before the two of them get together, after they do it's like she completely forgets she's meant to be studying.

And the ending
, I was expecting it to be tragic...it was ridiculous instead. As in, Ella gives up everything, and the two of them don't even sit down and say hey, maybe we should move to America together so you can have your career as well
!! It soured the book for me a lil. But I'm not mad I read it.
