That Inevitable Victorian Thing
by E.K. Johnston
I absolutely loved “That Inevitable Victorian Thing”. Once I figured out what the title alluded to, I kept giggling every time I read it. I thought it was such a unique way to address an overdone narrative. Honestly, I would love the book for the title alone.
Although the basic plot has been overdone many times before, “That Inevitable Victorian Thing” is able to bring a new twist to it. The twist could be considered LGBTQ+, but I felt that it was more about finding yourself and seeking a way to live with infinite happiness. Rather, it was about finding how to make everyone happy and satisfied, while still able to fulfill their roles and situations.
I loved that it was set in a modern day Victorian world. I kept expecting to read about carriages and would get thrown off when it talked about cars and computers. After a while, it was easy enough to adjust, but I just found it fun to have two different moments in time melded together. Behaviours and actions followed Victorian traditions, while technology was modern.
