Trying to Live With the Dead
by B.L. Brunnemer
I actually really enjoyed this book, but I do have some major issues with it. First of all, so much of this book seems to be a blatant rip off of CL Stone's Ghost Bird series that it made me not want to continue the series, despite the fact that there are some really good, interesting, and unique aspects to the book. The character Zeke is basically a carbon copy of North from the Ghost Bird series- black clothes, scary appearance, works as a mechanic, forces Lexie to eat "healthy", drives a motorcycle, and on and on. Second, the group seems to function almost exactly the same way as the Academy boys' group from GB, which I guess isn't a bad thing because those boys are such great guys and really care about each other, but I am definitely disappointed that the author seemed to get so many of her ideas directly from CL Stone. However, obvious rip offs aside, the writing is actually pretty good, pacing was well done for the most part, and the supernatural stuff was really fun. I also really like Lexie, even though she reminds me a lot of Kayli from CL Stone's other RH books, the Scarab Beetle series. I'm going to continue the series, but if I see anymore things taken directly from the GB or SB series, I'll have to give up on the rest of them.
