“To hell with what I deserve. All I want is you.”

3.5 stars. A really satisfying end! This is one of those trilogies that I do think might have been better served as a duology, but it didn't feel gratuitous, like the action and plot were being dragged out or unnecessarily prolonged. Each book had a well defined ending, and this one gives us the HEA.

And it's a well-earned one! I have to admit, the trajectory of their story took a much different turn than what I'd expected from the first book; I thought I was in for more politics and social upheaval. And honestly, I'm not at all displeased with the plot that we did get, one that has more to do with the politics of marriage, women's rights and a bit of family drama. We got to see another side of Murdo, and it was interesting seeing how being away from Edinborough affected them both. Especially David, living with this new disability. There's so much tenderness between them and there are some sacrifices made that actually feel significant and weighty. I also loved the part that Chalmers played, and the advice he gave.

I did wish that we got a little more closure with regards to David's family. I'm not sure his father was even mentioned in this book, which was surprising after the huge role he played in how David thought about himself. David's problems with alcohol also just seemed to... disappear? In a way that wasn't very realistic. I had expected that his leg problems would have made that struggle even more difficult? To be fair, we did have a five month skip between this book and the last, which could explain why it wasn't as much of an issue. Still, some stuff you like to see on page.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Hamish McKinay once again, and he's a solid new favourite. This was a really enjoyable series! I'm going to step away from it for a bit, but I'm really excited to sink my teeth into Iain's story.
