Lonesome Pyres by Eric Raglin
3.75
[3.75 stars]
"That's everything I needed, the only thing I ever wanted: a pain all my own."
Another eccentric and wonderfully disgusting horror anthology from Eric Raglin. This book is short and centers the perceived "outcasts" and "weirdos" of society, with a genre that sometimes combines sci-fi/dystopian elements — you sometimes sympathize with the characters, glorify them and root them despite being Satan worshippers, and sometimes you can relate with them, or even be grossed out by them.
Not every single story hits the same for me but I thoroughly enjoyed most of them; my favorites are "Macrame Flames," "The Spark," A Pain All My Own,"The Devouring Hole," and "The Chalk Martyrs." "The Spark" in particular stands out as we recognise the kind of entitled and misogynistic attitude that's prevalent today, and it's an extrapolation of tech that's directly created due to it. And "A Pain All My Own" I specifically loved because of how important it is to have your own identity and personality, feelings engendered by yourself, instead of it being dictated and ascribed by others, even if well-meaning. And "Fumigate Me" is just pure gross body horror — I do appreciate that Eric Raglin doesn't hold back and really hooks you with every single, distinctive tale.
Thank you Off Limits Press and BookSirens for the eARC, I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
