Books of Blood, Volumes 1-3 by Clive Barker
4.0
Even though I've read a couple of Barker books before I wasn't sure what to expect from this collection as it was something I had heard quite a lot about and had seen some of the movie adaptions. I was very pleased with what I had read.
The first two volumes are fantastic with imagery which even with today's standards of CGI would struggle to replicate for the screen. Most of the stories I found had an amazing closing line. More than once I would finish a story and think "How the hell does he do it?"
The third volume is the weakest. I liked the first story which had some pretty interesting imagery. One of the things Barker does well is to create original monsters and here he was able to suffuse body horror with ... I best not spoil it, plus I can't describe it!
But Rawhead Rex was a major turn off. The movie was absolutely awful and the story was no better. I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for the final volume. The other stories are worth a read but skip - and I mean this - SKIP Rawhead Rex.
