Harbinger Wars: Deluxe Edition by Joshua Dysart, Brian Reber, Ian Hannin, Tevor Hairsine, Stefano Gaudiano, Mark Pennington, Duane Swierczynski

4.0

I'm rating the deluxe edition because I read this book's contents across the three trades whose material comprises it.

Let me try that again.

When Valiant does a large crossover, they will publish the individual issues in event order, including as the series come out for that month. Then each series will get its trade paperback comprising its portion of the event, which generally works for standalone purposes but it's clear there are perspectives missing from the action. Then a thorough deluxe edition like this one comes out and binds all the issues together in the correct order, providing maximum story coherence and satisfaction.

And Valiant crossovers have been pretty great! On each side of the conflict, people believe themselves to be the put-upon champion of a cause while everyone else is an obstacle to be avoided/defeated. Even when an issue of one series recaps an event that just happened in a previous issue, everything still flows together nicely. This review is more or less an endorsement of a style of publishing instead of an actual review of the content, but that's because I really like the format!
