My First Five Husbands... And the Ones Who Got Away by Rue McClanahan

emotional hopeful informative lighthearted reflective sad medium-paced

Rue sure had a heck of a story to tell!  I’m glad she wrote it all down to share with us. She had so many love interests in her life that I’m not sure how she remembered them all but it sure made for an entertaining tale. I really wanted to see her find a longtime love and partner and as you read on, you can’t help counting to see if we’ve made it past the first 5 husbands :)

Though in her way, I think she had another soul mate in one of her earlier relationships too. Maybe he was always supposed to be one of her best friends, rather than her husband, but he was a good guy too.

We’re used to scandalous stories in current autobiographies and memoirs but it’s easier to forget about the books that have been around for awhile. This book came out in 2007. I’m glad that I found it now, despite it flying under my radar at the time.

Rue lived through it all. Bad relationships, good relationships, infidelity (I won’t say on whose part!), loses of friends and family, years spent trying to find a break in her career, motherhood, illnesses, and on and on.

She’ll talk about Golden Girls here and of course I wanted to read it. But it’s a part of a much bigger, longer life.

I enjoyed this story a lot but it made me sad at the end to think about how long she’s been gone. I’m glad she lives on forever as Blanche and I’m glad she got to tell her life story in this book.
