"Routine was no womanโ€™s friend. It made tracking them all so incredibly easy."

๐Ÿ’ญAnother brilliant book by Fields, she never disappoints and once again proven her mastery of the thriller genre with "Profile K"!

Midnight Jones works for a biotech company in London England reviewing profiles based on applications received by various companies and educational institutes. One day she gets an alert telling her the test someone took profiles them as Profile K. Confused Midnight is dying to know what exactly Profile K means. The test the subject took was quite disturbing. Midnight goes through the video and tests herself and for her, it was torture just to watch the accompanying videos but apparently not for the applicant.
The next day at work, she learns a woman has been brutally murdered in her neighborhood. Somehow she thinks there might be a link. As she starts to investigate on her own, more disturbing details and more crime emerges.
DI Ruskin is a detective faced with solving the grisly murder of a young girl Chloe, when another murder is linked he soon realises a serial killer is on the loose. When the killings reach Midnight she takes her concerns to Ruskin but is facing suspension from her job for leaking confidential information.

The first chapter was terrifyingly good and drew me in straight away. Fields certainly know how to capture the readerโ€™s attention from the off! Like most of her books, it's disturbing in places but the edge-of-your-seat read but I didn't expect anything less from Helen. "Profile K" has an unusual premise for a psychological thriller, but I do love the unusual.

Midnight's story is interspersed with chapters written by "The Applicant" and we learn of his background both in the present day and with flashbacks to the past. One thing thatโ€™s guaranteed to get me hooked is when an author takes the reader on a terrifying journey into the mind of a killer. I have a morbid curiosity about the darker side of the human psyche, so the chapters told from the killersโ€™ POV are not only fascinating but give the reader an insight into a very disturbed individual.
I loved the pacing, prose and plot and it was really unique. Fields has a gifted talent for crafting such layered and loveable characters and she also brilliantly creates disturbing serial killers!
There is some excellent character development and I was absolutely rooting for them all (bar the profile K, of course). I was drawn to several of them. Midnight Jones - what a protagonist! With her keen analytical mind and unwavering determination, she leaps off the page as a beacon of strength and resilience, Yes, Midnight was making some risky choices, but I was still rooting for her character the whole time. She was someone I admired for her integrity and her empathy towards others. Her devotion to her disabled twin sister is so heartwarming and I think we all need a Doris in our lives. The book contains many other interesting secondary characters as well, some good and some bad. Each character brings something unique to the table, and together, they make for one epic read.
The ending was phenomenal, won't give any spoilers but you will love it!!

The portrayal of the technology company Necto is so vivid it almost feels like a character in itself. This depiction adds a layer of complexity to the story, highlighting corporate entities' impact on individuals and society. This aspect of the novel serves as a thought-provoking exploration of the implications of our increasingly tech-driven world. It reminds me of the consequences that powerful technological corporations can cause worldwide if they go unchecked. It is genuinely terrifying.

Overall, Profile K stands out as a brilliant thriller that offers a unique and gripping concept that sets it apart from other novels in the genre. This wasn't a "can't put it down" read for me but it was totally different and I really liked it.

๐.๐’ I love the appearance of my one of favorite Forensic psychologists - Dr Connie Woodvine(The Shadow Man and The Institution).

๐.๐’.๐’ I can't wait to see what Ms Fields comes up with next! I think a new series starring Midnight Jones and Dr Connie Woolwine would be a huge success.

Menacing, macabre, unnerving and compulsive, dark, tense, thrilling, gripping and refreshingly different to most plots in the psychological genre, which is a HUGE bonus.
This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys dark and twisted thrillers!

"My mother believed that people appear in your life when you most need them, and she was a very wise woman,โ€™ Doris said."

"My best friend betrayed me today,โ€™ Midnight said. In spite of the missing pen drive, that was the thing hurting her the most. It was painful to say the words out loud.
Doris reached out and hugged her. โ€˜Oh, love. Then she was never actually your best friend, was she?"
