“I am what you made me,” she said. “Now you’re going to regret it.”
This is the first thing I’ve read by this author and wow this was a not what I expected! After her mother participated in a medical study while she was pregnant Yaya, along with all the other babies born into the study, was born with a condition that had never been seen before called INZ9-00, or Sibs. The corporation was deemed liable and is now responsible for every child affected. Everything is relatively fine all things considered until Yaya starts to have strange things happen clearly as a result of her Sibs. Yaya has to go on the run and protect herself or risk becoming a human lab rat to the corporation that did this to her in the first place. Hailey fits so much in 200 pages I felt like this was a much longer book as far as content, but I read it so quick because I couldn’t put it down. This is definitely one of my top 10 reads this year! It was so weird and kooky, but at the same time was written beautifully with lines like “but did that concrete build a home where lovers lived, or cement shoes that helped them drown?” This had so many elements that I wouldn’t have thought would go together, but were just made to mesh so well together it was slightly apocalyptic, that had a little bit of a classic movie monster feeling to it, but bringing it into a modern New York setting. I definitely thought I’d enjoy this book based on all the positive reviews, but I was not expecting this novella to hit this hard when I started it, but with the writing style and being a really crazy fun read I’m definitely a fan of this author now!
