The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
3.0

I liked this book despite its shortcomings. Follett apparently also writes thrillers and I believe it because this book reads like one despite its historical setting. It's plot driven, features likable but simply drawn protagonists, and is at times violent. Despite its length, for the most part the plot moves along quite nicely. The simple prose and modern dialog were the biggest detractions, but didn't cause me to become disinterested.
